New York City - a metropolis of world importance and the largest city in the U. S. with a population of over 8.3 million people. Is the economic and financial center of the United States, as well as one of the most famous cities in the world. New York City is the center of an enormous urban agglomeration, called the Greater New York (Greater New York) or Metropolitan New York. The population of Greater New York more than 19 million people, and on this indicator is second only to Tokyo, Seoul and Mexico City.

Like most cities, expanding, New York has absorbed a number of smaller cities that now we can speak about areas and suburbs. Thus, independent administrative settlements, actually merged with New York: Yonkers (Yonkers, 200 thousand) in the north, Paterson (Paterson, 150 thousand) in the north-west, Newark (Newark, 280 thousand) and Jersey City (Jersey City, 250 thousand) in the west, Elizabeth (Elizabeth, 130 thousand) in the southwest. Therefore, speaking of such a colossal metropolis often omitted administrative division and near New York meant a huge agglomeration and not only the New York City.

Located on the north-eastern United States on the Atlantic coast of New York City covers an area of 790 square kilometers and is the most populous of the great American cities. Per square kilometer on average in New York for more than 10,600 residents. At the same time the size of Greater New York is even more impressive. It is situated on the territory of three states and takes a huge area of 17,400 square kilometers.

Administratively the city is divided into five boroughs: Manhattan (Manhattan, center), Staten Island (Staten Island, south-west), Queens (Queens, east), the Bronx (Bronx, north) and Brooklyn (Brooklyn, south).
