Marie Tussaud (1761 - 1850), maiden name Hrosholtts (Grosholts), was born in Strasbourg, her mother worked as a housekeeper at the doctor Phillip Curtis, who was involved in wax. He taught Marie Tussaud the art of wax figures. In 1765 she made a wax figure of Joan Murray Dyubari, mistress of Louis XV.

The first exhibition of wax works Phillip Curtis took place in 1770 and enjoyed great success. 1776 exhibition held at the Palais Royal in Paris. Next event on the Boulevard du Temple in 1782 was the predecessor of the Cabinet of Horrors.

1777 Marie Tussaud created her first wax figure (Voltaire), the following were sculpted portraits of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Benjamin Franklin. During the French Revolution she made death masks of the royal family. After his death in 1794, his collection of Phillip Curtis moved to Marie Tussaud.

1802 Marie Tussaud moved to London. Due to the Anglo-French war Marie Tussaud and her collection is not able to return to France and she was forced to travel the UK and Ireland. 1835 was founded the first permanent exhibition on Baker Street in London.

One of the central hall of the museum was the Cabinet of Horrors. Part of the exhibition included victims of the French Revolution, the figures of murderers and other criminals.

Over time, the collection enriched with figures of other famous people such as Admiral Nelson, Walter Scott.

1884 collection moved to Marylebone Road. A lot of figures in 1925 were killed in a fire. However, the form is not affected, and the figure was reconstructed.
